Let's get you a FREE quote you can count on—no pressure, no surprises.
Just a straightforward handshake and a plan to get it done right.
We're a family-owned mechanical contractor that's been serving South Dakota and Iowa. From plumbing and HVAC to fire protection, we handle it all with the same commitment that started in a converted chicken coop—treating people right and doing quality work you can count on.
Back in 1983, Dwayne Klarenbeek had a simple idea: treat people right, do quality work, and build something that lasts. He started Midwestern Mechanical out of a converted chicken coop in Larchwood, Iowa, with nothing but a toolbox, a truck, and a commitment to doing things the right way.
Forty-plus years later, that little plumbing company has grown into something pretty special. We’re now 330+ employees strong, 100% employee-owned, and operating out of four locations across South Dakota and Iowa. But here’s the thing—the heart of what we do hasn’t changed one bit. We still believe that every customer deserves to be treated like family, every job deserves our best effort, and every team member deserves to grow.
We Show Up When You Need Us
24/7 emergency service isn’t just something we advertise—it’s a promise we keep. Middle of the night, holiday weekend, doesn’t matter. When you call, we answer.
We Know What We’re Doing
Largest non-union plumbing contractor in the region. Medical gas-certified for hospitals. Fire protection experts. HVAC specialists. If it keeps buildings running, we handle it.
We Treat You Like Family
No runaround, no surprises, no pressure. Just honest folks giving you straight answers and quality work you can count on.
We’re Invested in Our Community
100% employee-owned means every person on our team has skin in the game. We’re not going anywhere—this is our home too.

Plumbing, HVAC and Fire Protection Services
Our Iowa home base, serving northwest Iowa and southwest Minnesota. Full-service capabilities with a team that knows the area inside and out.
Plumbing and HVAC Services
Bringing our expertise to western South Dakota from our state-of-the-art facility. Complete plumbing and HVAC services for the Black Hills region.
Plumbing and Fire Protection Services
Our commercial plumbing experts serving the tri-state area. Focused on large-scale commercial and industrial projects.
We’re home to one of the state’s largest apprenticeship programs, and we’re pretty proud of that. Every Friday afternoon during the school year, our apprentices gather for classroom instruction and hands-on training taught by our own journeymen. It’s a 4-year program that’s free to employees—we pay you to learn.
Why? Because we believe in growing our own experts. Most of our leadership started on the tools and worked their way up. That’s just how we do things around here.
In 2023, we became 100% employee-owned through an Employee Stock Ownership Program (ESOP). What does that mean? Every person on our team is now an owner in the company they help build every day.
It’s not just about the financial benefits (though those are nice). It’s about having a say in how we do business, knowing your work matters, and being part of something bigger than yourself. When you call Midwestern Mechanical, you’re talking to owners, not just employees.
Whether you’re dealing with a plumbing emergency, planning a major construction project, or thinking about joining our team, here’s what you can expect from us:
✓ Honest Communication: We’ll tell you what you need to know, not just what you want to hear
✓ Quality Work: We stand behind everything we do
✓ Fair Pricing: No surprises, no gotchas
✓ Reliable Service: We show up when we say we will

That’s been our approach since 1983, and it’s what we’ll keep doing for the next 40 years.
